Breast Augmentation Wound Care: 3 Helpful Tips To Avoid Infection After Surgery

Avoiding Infection After Augmentation

Each year, more than 300,000 women in the US undergo breast augmentation to improve the size and shape of the breasts. Although the surgery offers many benefits, such as an improved profile, the procedure is not without risks, such as possible infection. To avoid complications after breast augmentation, women should follow these 3 tips for proper wound care.

1. Clean, dry and cover

As the wound is healing, patients must keep the area clean, dry, and covered to prevent infection. This often means staying out of bodies of water, such as bathtubs and pools, for some time, but quick showers are usually allowed after 2 days if the drains have been removed. The doctor will provide a list of post-operative instructions that specify how long dressings need to be worn and how often to clean the wound. Following the instructions prevents the introduction of bacteria into the incision site, minimizing the chance of complications after surgery.

2. Check for signs of infection

Early identification can be the difference between life and death when managing infections. Women who have recently undergone breast augmentation should check the surgical area daily for signs of infection, such as redness, pain, or unusual drainage. A high fever is another warning sign of infection that should not be ignored. Patients should contact the healthcare provider immediately for guidance if anything out of the ordinary appears.

3. Take antibiotics as prescribed

After surgery, most patients are given antibiotics to prevent infection. Taking this medication as directed is imperative to avoid infection. Many patients start to feel better a few days after surgery and think tossing the pill bottle is acceptable. However, even when the initial pain has subsided, the entire course of medication must be finished to ensure effectiveness.

Promote recovery safely

Other tips to remember after surgery include getting proper rest, eating a nutritious diet, and wearing the correct supportive garments. Although more extensive exercise should be avoided for some time, light walking almost immediately after surgery is often encouraged to get the blood flowing and prevent blood clots from forming. Ensure another adult can drive home from the hospital and help around the house for the first few days after surgery.

Infection-free surgery

Although the risk of infection is possible with any major surgery, proper care can reduce the chance of any serious complications. Follow the post-op instructions provided by the doctor and keep the wound clean and dry. Check for signs of infection and report anything concerns right away. Take antibiotics as prescribed and get as much rest as possible after surgery. With proper attention to detail, infections don’t have to be a problem after breast augmentation.
