Breast Reduction

John Park MD Plastic Surgery | Newport Beach, Irvine, Orange County, California

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue and skin to help patients achieve a breast size and shape that is more flattering to the figure. In addition to concerns about the appearance of very large and pendulous breasts, women with very large breasts often suffer from other symptoms, such as neck, back and severe shoulder pain, difficulty finding bras with sufficient support, irritation and pain at the shoulders from bra straps, heat and friction related rashes, and in severe cases, pain radiating down the arms.

Dr. John Park’s approach to a female breast reduction is in many ways similar to a wise-pattern breast lift. Incisions are made around the areola as well as from the bottom edge of the areola down to the crease under the breast and beneath the breast at its natural fold. This creates an anchor-shaped scar. In most instances, the excess breast tissue is removed from the lower half of the breast to preserve fullness at the upper pole of the breast. The nipple position is elevated along with the breast tissue and the areola is reduced in size.

Breast reduction can truly be life-changing for those who are uncomfortable or have limited activity due to their large breast size. Most patients return to full activity after a period of 2 to 4 weeks of light physical activity.
