Abdominoplasty (also called a Tummy Tuck) removes excess abdominal skin and tightens the abdominal muscles. Dr. John Park finds that the tummy tuck procedure is a popular choice for women who have either loose or hanging skin, excess fat and/or weakened abdominal muscles due to aging, pregnancy or weight loss. Here are a few tips on what you can expect following a tummy tuck surgery.
Post-Surgical Timeline
Depending on the full extent of the surgical procedure, you may opt to spend the night in the hospital for one or two nights. The first week following the tummy tuck you may have trouble standing in a full upright position, and this is due to the tightening of the skin.
Reduction in Activity
Limited activity is required for the first 10-14 days post surgery. Patients can usually return to work after 2 weeks, if no heavy lifting or strenuous activity is involved. Usually after 8 weeks patients can resume normal activity.
Abdominal Garments
Patients also typically wear an abdominal binder for three weeks following surgery. This minimizes swelling and increases comfort. Drains are placed at the time of surgery and are usually removed within two weeks of surgery. Pain management is extremely important, especially when the abdominal muscles are tightened. Most patients are initially given narcotic pain relievers and switch to double strength Tylenol five to seven days following surgery.
Wound Healing
The wound healing process however can continue for up to a year following the procedure. During this time you can experience swelling, pulling, numbness and tightening in the incision area. The scar may also be red and puffy. It is important to keep it out of direct sunlight during the healing phase. In addition, scar gels or creams can be applied.
Finally, in about four to six weeks, patients can usually resume their normal daily activity.
