Whether you have undergone a tummy tuck, a mommy makeover or a breast augmentation, each surgery has its own risks and complications associated with it. A complication with breast augmentation, although not common, is an implant rupture.
Saline Implant Rupture
Patients that have a saline implant rupture are usually very well aware of it early on. The breast appears to deflate, and there may or may not be pain associated with it. As saline implants are more “user-friendly,” the body absorbs the saline and rids itself of it. To avoid future problems, such as scar tissue, it is recommended to remove these implants as soon as possible and replace them with new ones.
Silicone Implant Rupture
Patients with silicone ruptures normally present with similar symptoms. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, redness and even tingling of the breasts. It can also be associated with scar tissue formation and pain associated with hardening of the capsule around the breast. However, it is important to remember, that some individuals may be asymptomatic and the results may be found on a diagnostic radiograph, including an MRI. Silicone mastitis and calcified granulomas are severe complications due to ruptured silicone implants.
Although it has been found that silicone ruptures do not cause disease in the body, to avoid further complications, and infection, see your plastic surgeon immediately if you suspect rupture.
Due to the limitations of mammography and ultrasound, in November 2006, the FDA directs an MRI be done every three years to determine the integrity of the shell of the silicone implant. It is important and advised to see your plastic surgeon regularly after breast implant surgery.
