Have a Cold? Why You Should Reschedule Surgery | Dr. John Park, Newport Beach

Fall is a great time of year. The dreadful summer heat finally gives a little and makes way for cooler, more comfortable days. However, along with nicer weather comes the start of flu season and there’s nothing good about that. It’s important to take note if you begin to come down with a little something prior to your surgery at John Park MD Plastic Surgery. What may seem like no big deal, can actually pose as a serious health risk for your scheduled surgical procedure and here’s why.

Anesthesia Can Make Sore Throat Symptoms Worse

Anytime you are being placed under anesthesia caution has to be taken. If you’re sick, you run the risk while under anesthesia of potential breathing problems, such as shortness of breath or narrowing of breathing passages. Anesthesiologists can help to control these complications; however, it’s better to not put yourself at risk in the first place. Also, if you have a sore throat it can worsen due to your mouth and throat drying out while under sedation.

Colds Cause Your Body to Work Harder

When you’re sick, your body is busy working hard to fight off infections. Think about how difficult simple tasks feel when you’re sick, such as walking the dog or even just making your bed. Now multiply that by 10. Plastic surgery requires time for your body to recover and heal. During that time, your body works to repair tissues and prevent infection. If you’re already sick with an infection, your immune system will be overworked, leaving you susceptible to further illnesses or complications.

A Coughing Fit Can Become More Than Just Annoying

One of the worst things about being sick is the coughing fits. Coughing puts a strain on your body, sometimes even causing internal pain. Following surgery, you will more than likely have sutures which if enough strain is put on them can come loose or open.

Take Precautions to Avoid Getting Sick

If your surgery date is set, follow these tips to avoid having to reschedule due to illness.

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise
  • Drink lots of water
  • Use disinfectant cloths and hand sanitizer

If you feel like you’re getting sick, it’s important to notify Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. John Park immediately. Depending on timing, you may be able to deal with your health issue soon enough without it interfering with your surgery.
