04 Sep Are My Breast Implants Dropping Normally?
Enhancing your figure with breast implants from John Park MD Plastic Surgery is an exciting time. You can’t wait to see the final results, and we don’t blame you. However, it takes time for your body to heal and recover as well as for your new implants to “drop” into place. Every patient is different and recovery times vary, so it’s important to understand what to expect following breast augmentation.
What Does it Mean for Breast Implants to Drop?
It’s referred to as the “drop and fluff” process, and it pertains to how your implants will slowly shift downward into place as the breast skin stretches and the muscles relax. That’s the drop. And then the fluff is when the implants begin to fill in the lower breast tissue below the nipple. This process helps the breast implants to take shape and develop a more natural appearance.
The Drop and Fluff of Breast Augmentation
Immediately after breast augmentation, your implants may feel very tight and sit high on your chest. This is completely normal and nothing to be alarmed about. It’s simply because your skin and chest muscles are reacting to the insertion of the breast implants. Once the muscles begin to relax, your implants will settle into the tissue pocket that was created for them. There is no exact time period for this to happen, but most implants begin to drop a couple of days following surgery with them reaching their final position after three months. There are a couple of variables that may affect how quickly your implants drop, including:
• Implant placement – Submuscular implants take longer to drop because the muscle needs more time to relax.
• Implant size – Heavier implants tend to drop more.
One thing you can do to help your implants settle properly is to wear your compression bra and massage your breasts during your recovery. Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. John Park will give you post-surgery directions and will advise you of any specifics for your recovery.
