The terms breast augmentation, breast implants, breast lifts, and even “boob job” are often used interchangeably. However, they are different procedures—all of which are offered at John Park MD Plastic Surgery. However, a breast augmentation with lift combines both a breast lift and breast implant. It is the most common type of cosmetic breast surgery because most women have excess skin but also want fuller breasts.
A breast lift is only the removal of excess breast tissue. Many women are good candidates for this surgery. They already like the overall shape and size of their breasts, but have found that their breast skin has become lax. This is often due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, age, weight fluctuations, genetics, or a combination of these factors. We lose collagen and elastin in our skin as we age, which causes skin laxity. However, when breasts change in size, that can increase laxity.
Breast implants can be made of a range of materials, most commonly silicone and saline. They can be placed on top or beneath the chest muscles, although beneath the muscles has become more common because it looks more natural. Implants are designed to increase breast size and change the shape and profile of the breasts. Some women want only the implants. These patients are usually younger, have naturally smaller breasts, or have exceptionally taut skin rich in collagen and elastin. Breast implants without a lift also have the benefit of less scarring than a breast lift or breast augmentation. However, all breast surgeries performed by a skilled surgeon have scars that are well hidden.
