23 Nov Five Common Plastic Surgery Myths
Whether you are considering a tummy tuck or breast augmentation or maybe just a Botox injection, the myths that one hears regarding any or all of these procedures can be mind-boggling, to say the least.
Plastic surgeons hear all sorts of these “myths” from their patients and are working hard to try to debunk the old wives tales that are out there. Here are just a few myths we’d like to clear up:
1. Plastic Surgery is The Same As Cosmetic Surgery
All plastic surgeons are not board certified in plastic surgery. It is quite possible that the plastic surgeon trained in another field, far removed from plastic surgery, however, has ventured out of his chosen field and into plastic surgery. This is what is known as “white coat confusion”. So, these doctors who purport to be “board certified” in cosmetic surgery are actually not board certified in plastic surgery. To be so, involves many years of specific training in all areas of plastic and cosmetic surgery.
Always inquire about the specifics of the doctors’ board certification and if they are members of the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons.
2. Only Women Get Plastic Surgery
Uh, no, definitely not anymore. Men are turning to plastic surgery for help in record numbers. Although traditionally women have been the “pioneers” in this arena, men are not far behind.
Many men report needing a “competitive edge” in business and are looking to Botox, laser treatments, and fillers, with liposuction being a favorite among men. With little downtime and relatively low-cost, it’s just what the doctor ordered.
3. Plastic Surgery Leaves No Scars And Lasts Forever
No plastic surgeon will ever guarantee no scarring. Of course many are masters at making scars look smaller and more refined, but all plastic surgery involving incisions and will leave some type of scarring, but the goal will always be the least amount of scarring possible.
While most plastic surgery procedures are indeed long-lasting, many different factors can contribute to how long a procedure will last. If you keep up with your skincare, have surgical touch-ups and maintain your overall health, the chances of a long-lasting result are very high.
4. Only The Rich And Famous Have Plastic Surgery
Simply said…False. Most aesthetic patients are normal, everyday people seeking to improve their overall appearance and boost their confidence. Plastic surgery is a thriving industry and certainly not based on 1% of the population.
5. Plastic Surgery Is For Vain People
One must remember that plastic surgery encompasses a wide range of aesthetics. From birth defects to cleft palates, from cancer reconstruction to injuries, this specialty is not just about vanity, but also about real problems. Having said that, when a patient does choose surgery for cosmetic reasons, it is often because diet, exercise or non-surgical procedures can’t accommodate them.
There are many myths that surround the world of plastic surgery. It is important for you to do your homework when it comes to finding the right board certified plastic surgeon. He/She will be able to help you to debunk any myths and to get you all the answers to any of your plastic surgery questions.
