02 Mar Studies Show Women with Breast Implants Have Higher Self-Esteem
Many women are initially interested in breast augmentation because of the aesthetics, but there is also an inherent tie to positive self-esteem associated to this procedure. At John Park MD Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures and that echoes trends around the world. Breast implants have long been one of the most requested procedures.
According to various research, women who undergo breast augmentation have higher levels of self-esteem than women who are thinking about breast implants but have yet to get the procedure. How we look and how we feel about ourselves simply can’t be separated, and looking at the self-confidence of women before and after breast augmentation is a great way to emphasize this connection.
How Breast Augmentation is Different than Other Breast Enhancement
Many women who get breast implants have tried non-surgical ways of getting the full, perky, voluptuous, and undeniably feminine silhouette that breast implants provide. One of the most common ways to do this is with padded push-ups bras. Although these results can be great, they are also temporary and often uncomfortable. Women might get a short boost of confidence with these bras, but what about when wearing swimsuits—or getting intimate?
Breast augmentation provides permanent results that do not need such support. In fact, many women with breast implants find that they can go bra-less if they choose to, which is an added bonus to the procedure. Having the confidence to wear anything you like (or nothing at all) without needing to depend on temporary and uncomfortable supports, like special bras, provides unprecedented freedom.
What’s the Difference Between a Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift?
Sometimes these two terms can be confusing, but they are actually two very different procedures. Only a breast augmentation enhances the breasts via breast implants. When opting for a breast lift, you are choosing to remove excess skin that can cause skin laxity and this procedure does not increase the size or volume of the breasts. However, in some cases, a patient might be a good candidate for combining breast augmentation (breast implants) with a breast lift.
Every cosmetic surgery can and should be customized just for you. There’s a lot of options when it comes to breast implants including the size, shape, texture, materials, and placement. Working with a reputable plastic surgeon is the best way to ensure you’ll get results you love. Let’s take a look at what some of these options mean.
Types of Breast Implants
There are two primary shapes of breast implants, including round and teardrop shaped. The former provides more va-va-voom fullness and can still look natural, but the latter is designed to be totally natural-looking and mimic the look of real, perky, full breasts. The placement of the implants also plays a role in the overall look.
You also have two options for placement: above the chest muscles or below. Each of these placements offers unique benefits. Above the chest muscle placement is a little less invasive, which means a slightly shorter recovery period—however, patients are still very pleasantly surprised at how quickly they can get back to their usual routine after any breast augmentation. Putting implants below the chest muscles can make them look even more natural, and especially for women who are very slender.
Choosing Your Breast Implants
There are three types of breast implant materials including saline, silicone, and “gummy bear.” Saline implants are inserted while empty, then filled with a saline solution after ensuring their placement. This can mean a smaller incision since the implant is relatively smaller when it is deflated. Saline is also a completely natural solution that is not harmful to the body. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone, which some people prefer because of the organic feel. Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone implant, and one of the newest materials available.
Finally, there’s texture. Breast implants can be either smooth or textured (though of course they won’t “feel” textured after placement). Textured implants can be a good choice for those opting for teardrop-shaped implants because it helps the implant anchor in place. Breast implants will not be traveling anywhere, but small and natural shifts can be expected—just like your own breasts change shape and position with movement.
