07 Dec Tummy Tucks And Liposuction – Different But Cohesive Surgeries
Tummy tuck and liposuction procedures are the most commonly used procedures to flatten the tummy and get rid of belly fat. However, it is important to be aware that on their own, they are very different procedures.
What Is A Tummy Tuck
An abdominoplasty or what is commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, involves the removal of a large amount of skin from the lower abdominal area, as well as tightening the skin on the upper abdominal area. It also tightens the abdominal muscles.
What Is Liposuction
On the other hand, Liposuction removes fat deposits using a tube and a vacuum mechanism. Liposuction is generally used to reduce specific areas of stubborn fat that diet and exercise just cannot seem to target with any success.
When would a tummy tuck be “What the doctor ordered?”
Many times, after pregnancies, the tummy tuck becomes a wonderful option for women. When one is plagued by a significant amount of excess skin, stretch marks, stretched stomach muscles and difficulty in living a healthy life, then a tummy tuck is the way to go. It, by no means, is a simple procedure, but, ultimately, it will produce the results you want to see.
By tightening the abdominal muscles, a flatter stomach is achieved, it smoothes out the skin, reduces stretch marks and creates a very taut and toned appearance. And, let’s face it, who wouldn’t want that?
When Is Liposuction alone, the way to go?
Firstly, let’s remember that liposuction is not nearly as extensive a procedure like a tummy tuck. You might say it is for those who “don’t require as much work.”
Liposuction is for those who are near their ideal body weight and have good tone in the abdominal muscles. It removes excess fat under the skin and above the stomach muscles.
Liposuction is not meant to remove a large amount of fat in a single day. What it is not is a solution for obesity. What it is a safe method of removing relatively small amounts of fat in targeted areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. And we all know where those areas are.
As with any surgical procedure, risks and side effects need to be a consideration before moving forward with any elective surgery. As previously mentioned, tummy tucks are extensive, but ultimately rewarding procedures. They require substantial incisions, and the belly button must be repositioned and reconstructed, very possibly leaving an unnatural appearance.
Liposuction has much less scarring. Side effects can include bruising, temporary numbness and in some rare cases, infection.
By selecting an experienced and well-respected board certified plastic surgeon, you can reduce the risk of side effects and assure yourself of the best possible outcome whether you choose a tummy tuck or liposuction or combine the two into one surgical procedure.
