Are More Women Opting for Silicone Breast Implants?

When a woman chooses to have breast augmentation it is often for very personal reasons. Some women choose to have breast augmentation as a way to replace diminished volume, often resulting from weight loss or breast-feeding. Others have this procedure to correct their breast size and make it proportionate with the rest of their body.

Amongst the decisions regarding size, shape, incision location and more, a common question many patients have is simply silicone or saline? There are a variety of reasons to choose one versus the other, here are a few common deciding factors patients discuss. Please schedule a consultation with Dr. John Park to discuss factors that are unique to your situation.

Why Choose Saline Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. The benefit of saline implants is that the size is adjustable during surgery by filling the implant with more or less saline. Some surgeons feel they are able to obtain better symmetry with this option. Additionally, should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.

Why Choose Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. Most types of silicone gel implants are wrapped in 3 layer shells for maximum protection and the gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. Unlike the saline breast implants, which need to be filled after being inserted into the breast, silicone gel implants are pre-filled so they are firmer than saline implants and are more likely to stay in shape.

Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants

Both saline breast implants and silicone gel implants are safe to use and they do not pose long-term health hazards even when the shell of the implant ruptures. However, women who are very concerned with their health prefer to have silicone gel implants because the gel inside the implant does not easily escape from its casing, even when the shell ruptures. Additionally, many women say silicone implants look more natural.

Ultimately, the best implants for your needs will depend on your unique physical anatomy in addition to your goals for breast augmentation. Contact Dr. John Park today to learn more about breast augmentation and schedule a consultation – (949) 777-6883.
