Breast ptosis or breast sagging is an issue that is not uncommon as women age. There are quite a few factors involved in ptosis, including gravity, weight gain, and weight loss, the number of pregnancies and the skin’s overall elasticity.
The good news for women with breasts that sag is that a plastic surgeon can quickly correct breast ptosis. A breast lift can raise the breasts amazingly well and regain that young “perky” look that many women desire. In more severe cases, a breast lift with breast augmentation (implants) may be recommended by your plastic surgeon for the ultimate result. Read on to learn more about ptosis and how your plastic surgeon can help you regain the look you desire.
Measuring Ptosis Of The Breasts
Ptosis is measured by how far your breasts hang over your inframammary crease – this is the line where your chest and breasts meet. If you believe you are a “ victim” of ptosis, place a ruler where the chest and breast meet. Note the position of your nipples. If your nipples are below the top of the ruler, then you have ptosis. The further down your nipples, the more severe the case.
In some cases, the areola has simply stretched out. This may be a simple asymmetry issue with or without ptosis present.
Breast Lift with Augmentation
For mild cases of ptosis, a simple breast lift will usually do the trick. However, many surgeons perform an augmentation in conjunction with a breast lift. This is especially true if the breasts have lost volume.
While breast implants usually make breasts larger, this may not always be the case when done with a breast lift. Your surgeon can remove excess tissue and replace it with an implant to give you the same breast size.
As a result, the breasts will look firmer and more youthful. At the same time, areola size can be decreased to give your breasts a more natural look.
