Breast Implant Placement Matters
Women who choose breast augmentation want the best possible outcome for a boost in self-confidence and aesthetic goals. Therefore, breast implant results matter, as both surgeon and patient benefit. There are numerous factors that impact the look and feel of breast implants after recovery. While many believe breast implant type plays a significant role, where the surgeon places the implant holds similar weight. The right placement, either under or over the pectoral muscle, optimizes breast augmentation outcomes.
Let’s try submuscular placement
Breast implants must be placed within the existing breast structure to enhance the size and shape. A possible location is under the chest muscle, known as submuscular placement. To perform a submuscular placement, the surgeon makes an incision in the pectoralis major muscle beneath the breast tissue. The implant is then placed in that pocket. Submuscular placement is typical with silicone implants. Sometimes, the surgeon will take a dual-plane approach, where only part of the implant is placed under the muscle.
Understanding subglandular placement
Surgeons can consider an over-the-muscle option called subglandular placement. The implant goes above the pectoral muscle but just behind the breast tissue. This placement results in a fuller appearance, especially in the upper region of the breasts. As the surgeon does not make incisions in the pectoral muscle, the surgery time is shortened. Some patients notice a faster recovery as no additional healing is needed. There is also less postoperative pain since the pectoral muscle is not disturbed.
Weighing pros and cons
Submuscular placements are popular for women with little natural breast tissue. The implant sits in a natural position. This option also appeals to women who are looking for subtle yet natural changes that reflect weight loss or fitness goals. Submuscular implants are not prone to rippling and have a lower risk of capsular contracture. Recovery, however, is longer and more painful. Subglandular placement is perfect for a fuller breast and cleavage. This option also accommodates larger implants. Implant placement and recovery are also closely related. Subglandular implants have faster recovery times, more control over implant size, and less postoperative pain. At the same time, these implants have a higher risk of capsular contracture, bottoming out, and rippling.
Choosing the right placement
Patients must look at all factors when deciding on placement. Implant type, incision location, and aesthetics are factors that impact location. During consultations, surgeons will discuss the best option based on the patient’s body type and goals. The long-term appearance and challenges also matter. For instance, athletic women with submuscular implants will notice more movement, shifting, and distortion when flexing the chest muscles. Women with subglandular implants may need to contend with rippling or deflated breasts if an implant rupture occurs.
Achieve your amazing aesthetic
Submuscular placement is ideal for women with smaller frames who want smaller implants and a more natural look. These women have less breast tissue and would prefer to lower the risk of rippling. Subglandular placement helps women have a fuller upper breast appearance. These women have more breast tissue and can accommodate an easier procedure and faster recovery. Subglandular implants also work with a breast lift or other supporting procedures. Make the best choice based on the surgeon’s guidance, past experience, and long-term goals.
